Tribal groups and Indigenous peoples held a protest by chewing on traditional betel nuts, or “nganga,” and symbolically spitting on a protest banner in front of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources headquarters in Quezon City, Philippines, on August 8, 2024, to demand a concrete response from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System’s insufficient documents required by the ECC and to issue a cease-and-desist order on the Kaliwa Dam project.
